Foot Profile

badminton fit reference · rev 2026-06-29

Source of truth for foot geometry → shoe sizing. Derived from self-measurement + two top/sole photos (2026-06-29). Re-measure heel-to-toe when convenient (see footer) to firm up the length figure.

Loaded width is the number that matters — the foot spreads under landing/lunge load, so fit to 9.2 cm, not 8.8.

Sizing logic

Yonex men's chart (internal cm length):

UKcmEUnote
725.540current HY Ultra-i → toes jam (right foot)
7.526.040.5primary pick — ~0.5 cm clearance, heel still locked
826.541fallback — ~1 cm clearance if 7.5 still short after long play
8.527.041.5too long — heel will slip
Why UK 7 jams: internal length 25.5 cm ≈ your foot length → near-zero toe gap. Add session swelling + forward slide on lunges + an Egyptian big toe + lead-foot load = big toe hits the wall. Fix is length, not width.

Yonex guidance is foot-length + 0.5–1 cm. You currently have ~0. Buy both 7.5 and 8 if the seller's return policy allows, fit to the right foot, keep the one that clears without slipping.

Asics sizing

Asics uses US sizing on its own last — ignore the UK number, size by cm of foot length, leave 0.5–1 cm clearance at the toe.

Asics fit notes for this foot:

Target fit (the toe-gap principle)

~1 cm gap correct

The gap in the diagram is created by choosing the right size, not by the shoe having a long nose.

The 65Z4's external toe cap looks short in product photos because of its rounded Toe Assist Shape — that's the outside shape. Internal length still follows the cm chart. Don't judge fit from the photo silhouette.

Heel-lock lacing (runner's loop)

top eyelet (set back) toe ▲ ankle ▼ loop cross
  1. Lace normally to the 2nd-from-top eyelet, both sides.
  2. Feed each lace straight up into the top eyelet on the same side → makes a vertical loop.
  3. Cross each lace and thread it through the opposite loop (green).
  4. Pull down + out → loops cinch onto the ankle.
  5. Tie off.

Pins the narrow heel back so the foot can't slide forward into the toe box. Lets you safely run UK 8 without sloppiness.

Decision

PRIMARY: Asics Gel-Rocket 12 — standard "D" width — US 8 (US 8.5 fallback) — fit to right foot — heel-lock laced.
Narrow-forefoot fit, GEL cushioning for hard lead-foot landings, value + availability. Size by cm, not UK number.

ALT (Yonex family): 65Z3 / 65Z4, Men's standard fit, UK 7.5 (8 fallback). Toe Assist cap suits Egyptian toe. Same heel-lock lacing.

do standard width (D / Men's)   do size up for toe clearance   do heel-lock lace   do fit to right foot
avoid Wide / 2E variants   avoid pointed-toe lasts   avoid sizing by UK number on Asics
